Bringing Turquoise Into a Red Room

Or, How I Neutered My Red Sofa - Part 2 (click here for the first post in this two part series).

As I mentioned in
this post, I am dreadfully sick of my red sofa and chairs, but currently do not have the funds to re-cover them or buy new ones.  I have not had the time to sew a slipcover, and am actually a bit worried about slipcovering a sofa with attached cushions.

So I brought in a little turquoise to distract the eye away from the red!

I am thrilled with the addition of the turquoise in this room!

Here are some more "after" photos of my family room.....

(Just ignore the television perched on the shelf - I know it should be hidden, but it just isn't.)

I brought turquoise into the space with (1) painted furniture.....

(btw - I slipcovered the white chair with dropcloths a couple of years ago and chronicled that experiment here.)

(2) a few turquoise paintings (available here - shameless plug).....

(3) turquoise trim on the curtains.....

(super-easy - I just glued turquoise grosgrain ribbon with fabric glue onto a pair of IKEA Ritva panels)

(4) A collection of blue and turquoise globes.....

And (5) I sewed new covers for my pillows.....

And now,
You get a special treat for reading this entire post.....

BEFORE and AFTER photos!

Yippee!  Don't we all love those!?

Here is the "BEFORE" taken a few years ago.....

(gag reflex kicking in)

And the "AFTER"......

Whew!  Glad I updated THAT room!

The turquoise made a huge difference in 'real life' - as it truly brightened the room.  The yellow and red are no longer as 'heavy' in the room, as before.  In fact, the yellow is not as dark in 'real life' as the photos depict.  The pictures don't quite capture the new lightness (is that a word?) of the room, but trust me - it looks so much better!

I started Pinning last week! I have one Board that is only Turquoise and Red here.

You can follow my pins and boards, here....

Enjoy your day!

love your room!!! Did you slipcover that club chair? I am wanting to recover a sofa and thought about using painter's drop cloths. Have you ever used them for upholstry?
Trish, I love the cozy feel of this room. Love the red and turquoise with the yellow. Don't worry about the television. Mine is out in the open too. It is real life and not a magazine spread.
Beautiful!! I love this room! Martina
LOVE IT!!!! You are right, the turquoise tones all the red down beautifully.

On a side note: Those attached pillow backs on your sofa...no problem, surgically remove them :->

I did that with my sleeper loveseat and my recent cottage style slipcovers...very easy. I hate attached back!!!!

PS....I have no where to hide my TV. Who said it is supposed to be hidden????

I love your pillows. You need to go into pillows as well as invitation design. Is there nothing you can't do? Must be that GA Tech degree.

Those pillows are just perfect. I feel your pain about the sofa--I am currently trying (in vain mostly) to neutralize my bright GREEN sofa and matching chair. Honestly, what was I thinking? Well, you done good, the room looks great to me.
