The Remodeled Bedroom

A couple of weeks ago I gave you a glimpse of our recently remodeled guest bedroom.

I cannot show you a 'before' photo because this room was a storage room and my mom would die if I shared a picture of the room. But just ask my kids' friends what it looked like. My kids were never ashamed to open the door in front of their friends (After all, they think it is perfectly normal to have a room where you store dirty gym clothes, old furniture, boxes of files, a couple of headboards, sports equiment, a telescope not in it's box, empty gatorade bottles, backpacks, flipflops, filing cabinets, etc..)

So I will only be sharing the 'after' - in honor of my mother.

This was another "the graduation party is next week, I must decorate" transformation.   I completed this room in a week - NO LIE. The walls were painted 11 years ago when we moved in and I don't know the color - just light yellow.  I remember asking the paint store to cut the hall yellow in half with white.

The curtains are more Ritva panels from IKEA (so very thankful they come in 118" lengths!)

The mattresses came home one day on the top of my car, about three days before my daughter graduated from High School. I love embarrassing my kids.

See her texting in the front seat?  She had no idea our shopping trip would include driving home with mattresses on the car!
(the above piece of junk has 252,000 miles and is still rolling, by the way - woohoo!)

The old iron bed was given to me by my late mother-in-law five or more years ago.

 I actually have a black wooden bed I found at Goodwill that only cost $38 that I LOVE VERY VERY MUCH, but it needs single hook side rails and I can only find double hooks, right now. (just another excuse to look in every thrift store and antique barn I run across!)

The white matelasse was in a drawer, and I bought the white pillow shams at HomeGoods. The lamp is also a new HomeGoods purchase.

I wasn't really sure how I was going to decorate this room, but glanced at this cover of Elle Decor just before I headed to our new HomeGoods (40 minutes away).

I decided to go with the smokey teal blue color and of course a little green. Since I have plenty of turquoise and green in the rest of the house, and the gray living room is across the hall, I thought it would all blend. And it does.

I found this art paper on sale at Hobby Lobby that day and decided it would be my jumping off point (that is - the real life item I would use that would mimic the Elle Decor cover)

The art paper has a name, but I forgot it.  It was on sale that day - I needed three sheets and spent less than $5 to re-mat the old Madeline pages I framed years ago when this room was a playroom.

The mats were red, until I bought this blue paper.  Please note this is a thin paper - not mat quality - but I am not picky like that.  I just laid the Madeline pages over a colorful sheet of paper.  If you require fancy mats that are professionally cut - you might want to skip to the next paragraph. 

After I bought the art paper, I took a corner of the paper into my favorite some-what-local fabric store (30 minutes away) and found this fabric, which includes both the green and the blue.

The euro shams match perfectly and I only needed a yard (I covered the backs in white fabric).
I think God was helping me out that day, as everything fell together quite nicely and it all blended very well. 

I already had this green medallion fabric at home and made the two little pillows.

And here is the display I created over the mantle.

The little church painting recently sold on Etsy and will soon be shipped.

The cute needlepoint pictures are available in my Vintage Etsy shop. I already owned the mirror and everything else on the mantle.

The rug is the Ikea Tarnby rug I mentioned here. It matches the rug across the hall and helps to tie the two rooms together.

So, there you go. Everything else was already in the house. Just gave it a dusting and am quite happy with it!

Oh, the bookcase will probably go with my daughter to college - it is a Target purchase from years back.  The dropleaf antique table I found for $90 at one of my favorite junk stores and I tried to re-sell it in my booth, but had no takers.   It has a nice finish, so I was happy to keep it.   The cute white book rack was a purchase I made at the Pottery Barn Outlet when the kids were small.

The kids love this room, now.
I am constantly finding them with their friends, sitting in this room and chatting.

 I keep explaining that the reason they like it is because it is clean and uncluttered and that we could perform the same miracle in their room if they would just make an effort to clean up. They prefer just to sit in this already clean room. Of course.
