Faux Fire out of Chalk in Fireplace

We had soooo much to do prior to the homes tour.  The majority of our list was caused by procrastination of maintenance issues over a period of years.  That was a mouthful, but true.  One of the many things on my list was to restore the fireplace in our bedroom.  (Remember when my husband renovated the one in our living room, here?)

Well, the fireplace opening in our bedroom has been covered by a piece of plywood painted black since before we moved in.  We have no idea WHAT lies behind it.  Scary thought.  Skeletons, maybe.  The unknown seemed way too daunting to tackle prior to the tour, so we just left the plywood.  Yes - we had plywood instead of a fireplace during a tour of homes.  Pretty pitiful.  What do you think of me, now?

Here was my solution.....

Why not?  Only my son complained.  His exact words were "Has Dad seen this yet?"

I used the only piece of chalk I could find in the house directly on the 12+ year old black paint.  It worked just fine.  Took all of five minutes.

Here are a few more "fireplaces" I found in blog-land.

I am not alone.

Isn't that a cool surround?  Jeanette of Homa Style made it out of scrap wood! Read about it here.

I thought your painted fire was very charming! My girls all noticed and commented...we liked it. Very creative. I really enjoyed touring your home, and it's even more lovely 'in person' than via your blog. You have wonderful taste. Thanks for sharing it with all of us!

Ha ha ha!!! I love it!!! I really like it.. I think it is that unexpected element in the room that gets people talking! I know I'd be talking about it!! :) Now, the part about not knowing what is behind there.. that kind of freaks me out. Thanks for sharing! Hugs!!
