Normaltown

Our closest shopping 'mecca' is Athens, Georgia. (Don't cry for me, Atlanta is only an hour, away.)

Athens has some cool, quirky areas to visit. Today, my 10-year-old helper and I took a few pictures of some of my favorite houses in Athens. These particular homes are in the 'Normaltown' section of Athens.

(through the car window)

This victorian/gothic has been this pretty pea-green color for several years.

The house, above, is currently being painted - that is why the columns are not white.

This is a 'prairie style' colonial brick home with green tile roof.

I have a "thing" for gothic dormers. This one is probably antebellum (pre-civil war).

(Disclaimer for my Southern readers: I, personally, am a Yellow-jacket and do not care for bulldogs, but I do like the town of Athens. (So please don't go and have my GT diploma revoked!)) Plus, I am always happy to drive through Athens with my windows down to let the UGA faculty toss diplomas in my window. (just kidding, just kidding)

Nerdy info that I find interesting: The name "Normaltown" comes from the old teacher's college that was located there. Teacher's colleges used to be called "Normal Schools" because the teachers were taught how to teach the standards or 'norms.' -From the french term "école normale." The Teacher's college is still standing, but is used as an inland U.S. Navy School, now.

one more thing -
I am participating in The Inspired Room's Beautiful Life party.

What pretty homes! I like Gothic Dormers too. There are none in my town, but in the next village, there's several. I wonder if a was a specialty of a local builder. Or if everyone copied the first one? Funny how certain styles are limited to one area.

Looove... the Pea Green house --- the pink flowers in the yard go so great with it. I could live there...no problem.

Even hard core Georgia Tech fans secretly love Athens.
What cool pictures and great information. I was a teacher, I thought I was normal, and I did know that teachers' schools were called Normal schools, but not why. Oh the fun we can have with that term in this day and age.
