Ms. Snootypants
While trying to avoid doing anything around my OWN home, I ran across this cute and colorful apartment via Canadian House and Home.
The apartment belongs to Katelyn Jarrett of the design firm Peaks and Rafters and she is in the video. She is a designer and her work can be found here. I could not find any still photos of her home, but loved the mixture of fun colors.
The pretty armoire/cupboard has her shoes and sweaters and everything visible behind the glass. Love it.
Looking at the contrasting patterns and colors reminded me of a visit to a furniture store in my twentys.
Particularly, this shot....
When I was in my mid to late 20's, I wanted a particular type of seating for our family room. We had an empty dining room AND living room at that time. (No money, plenty of kids.) The family room was nothing special and needed more seating. I scraped together enough money for an upholstered chair and took my child (or maybe children) into the furniture store. As luck would have it, a snooty lady a generation or two older than me was assigned to 'help' me. I am sure she was thrilled to see my kids in tow.
She asked about my family room. I showed her the fabric I had on my windows (which I found at a great price and sewed, myself) and the fun fabric on our sofa. I found that particular sofa at the Rich's furniture outlet in Atlanta back in the mid-1990's. The snooty lady at this furniture store immediately let me know that I had no idea what I was doing and told me that my fabrics simply didn't match. She tried to push me into a really matchy-matchy set of fabrics that looked like they belonged in her house, not mine. Ms. Snootypants pretty much told me that I needed to completely re-decorate my entire home. She then set about to show me what I needed to do. (I am a pleaser by nature. I don't like to argue, I like for other people to be happy. In addition, I have never had much in the way of self-confidence, but I KNOW what I like in my home and I honestly don't really care if anyone else likes it. After all, I am the one who lives in it.)
I remember panicking just a little and wondering how I was going to escape out of that little fabric selection area of the store before she took my wallet out of my pocketbook and paid for an ugly chair with my money. I think I used a baby or kid excuse. In fact, I am sure of it.
I found a chair I liked elsewhere -with no assistance- and picked out a fabric I liked - and we have been happy with that chair for over a decade. It was nice buying something without having Ms. SnootyPants needing to approve of my selection.
All of that to say, do you see how Katelyn Jarrett's fabrics don't necessarily 'go together,' yet they do? They look fantastic in that space. Ms. Snootypants would be appalled. And yet, Katelyn Jarrett is the designer. What a happy ending.

I watched that video before coming back to comment, and I have to say, I like what Ms Jarrett said (sorry, can't remember her first name) about having pieces that were handed down from her family and when she sees them, it makes her think of family!! For a while now, I've been struggling with 'what is my style?"... and thinking I have a hodge-podge of other peoples things all over the place! (and it made me feel like I had no taste of my own)
I think...after hearing her say that, that my taste IS for the FAMILY aspect in my home. I should embrace it!
Thanks for this post. I liked it and I think I learned something about myself today!
